Underground Kyiv: something you would not find in a city guide

There are some a little bit crazy guys called "diggers" who have strange hobbies - they explore cities. Abandoned houses, metro stations, even military objects etc can be something they want to see and to take few pictures. It is hard to answer the question "Why not to do something normal, for example stamps collecting?" but each of us has his own strangeness and diggers too.

They just look for an opportunity to get into (sometimes break into) an object that might be interesting for them. But there is one rule - you cannot cause any damage on purpose in order not to make troubles for the people working at this object and for other diggers that might wanna have an access to the object too.

There are many such objects in Kyiv: old drainage systems, underground rivers, old and partly plundered bomb shelters, World War II pillboxes and further more. There is also so called "Stalin metro" or "Object №1" - big tunnels under the river Dnipro that allowed to transport trains from the one bank to another one under the river while the surface for example is being bombed.

What is an urban drainage system? UDS is designed to reduce the potential impact of ground water that might cause landslide. Such systems are usually digged out in hills with some buildings on the top of it. In other words if there were not any of this UDS - buildings on the tops of the hills could just slowly slide down from the top. That's how do they look like -

!!! UDS have nothing to do with sewage. This all is just about rain and ground water.

There are few systems that were built in form of big tunnels that even a train could fit in them.

Bats like such places that is why you could see a lot of this animals in drainage tunnels.

The most urban drainage systems in Kyiv are built in a form of trapeze...

...but there are some exceptions. The oldest UDS are built for example in a form of arc.

The oldest and the most interesting one is so called Nikolska drainage system. Each UDS has its own name, as for example UDS-28 or UDS-28bis, but diggers created their own names for mostly all drainage systems. There are for example UDS of Dog Death or UDS of Horror.

This is one of the parts of UDS Nikolska.

It's one of the most beautiful and oldest urban drainage systems

There are plenty of underground rivers in Kyiv. All they flew once on the surface but later they were covered with a brick or concrete sewer.
Thousands of people walk everyday on the Ukraine's capital main street - Kreschatik - and do not even guess that there is a river flowing under them. More then hundred years ago the river flew in the center of the street. But during rains the river became deeper and brighter that even horses sunk in it. That is why the City Council decided to build a brick sewer to let the river flow under the street.

This is just one of the many secrets the city has ... Kyiv has much more to reveal for those who look

"Like" and "share" =)
